Movie Trailer Blog

The movie trailer for “The Haunting in Connecticut” is aimed towards people who watch scary movies. It is definitely not for minors and it’s more than likely aimed at people who are 16 to 40 years old. It is really a wide age group excluding young children and old people who would suffer from very jumpy shocking movies.

WATCO: What are the consequences of moving into a house that is haunted on how scared you get.

Enthymeme: Moving into a house that is haunted increases how scared you get because moving into a house that is haunted puts you in a situation where lots of very disturbing and freaky things can happen to you.

The movie trailer states that it is based on a true story which builds a strong sense of ethos for the movie. The phrase “based on a true story” is universal and people tend to assume that everything in the movie is true and actually happened.
This really helps make the movie even scarier and is why they included it in the trailer.

There is so much emotion involved for such a short trailer. By including some of the best scariest moments it can appeal to the target audience. The trailer plays on the relationship between members of a family and talks about the son being the target of the evil spirits. It is very clever having the son as the focus because children tend to be vulnerable and weak unable to defend themselves. This creates sympathy and panic in the minds of the audience.

The trailer gives sufficient information for the actual movie without giving away any conclusions or letting the audience know too much. It is fairly typical of a scary trailer with jumpy clips and dark lighting. I think it is probably an accurate portrayal of the real movie however a lot of the time in trailers they only show the best parts of the movie which leads the audience to have false impressions.

I think that it is a very effective trailer and creates all the right emotions and feelings of the actual movie. It certainly sells the movie as being frightening and jumpy. The fact that it was released around Halloween makes it even scarier because people are already thinking about that kind of genre.

Analysis of Andrew Wyeth

This painting is entitled July 4th and the famous American artist known as Andrew Wyeth painted it. Wyeth is a realist and paints from things he sees around him in his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. His target audience is the American people who are perhaps very patriotic and only see America flawless.

WATCO: What are the consequences of narrow-minded American on the recalling of major historical events

Enthymeme: Narrow-minded Americans manipulate historical events because narrow-minded Americans do not want to admit that some of America history is bleak and bloody.

There is certainly a great deal of emotion being conveyed in this piece of art. The choice of color brings out a dark and mysterious feel. It is interesting to see that the American flag is the only thing that is in a bright color, which represents this powerful country being a part of this dark and moody surrounding. Feelings of depression and sorrow are displayed by the colors and the figure sitting with his head slumped forward. It is very unlike an American artist to show America in such a poor light but Wyeth chooses to do so and manages to keep the dignity of Americans in the process. The man sitting also has a touch of red paint on him to show his relationship to the flag but at the same time red has the ability to symbolize blood and despair.

Wyeth is 91 years old and has been around for a while and I think for this reason is he a credible source and even an authority on American history because he has seen most of it.

When looking at STAR I agree that from the painting style it is certainly a sufficient representation of what he is trying to convey but as for accurate probably not and it is definitely not typical American art.

I think it is a very effective painting and he used just the right colors to give the meaning just the right feel. By not showing the persons face in the painting lets the imagination of the person looking at it run wild with questions.

Source Article for Paper A: A World of deception

Article: http://www.heartlight.org/articles/200703/20070319_deception.html

The target audience for the article “A World of Deception” by Phil Ware is primarily those people that are religious who already know a thing or too about God because Ware does not explain certain religious terms and assumes that audience knows. People who are perhaps trying to improve there own life and seek guidance.

WATCO: What are the consequences of deceiving on those that you use it with and on your own integrity.

Enthymeme: Deceiving will negatively affect your character and how others view you because God deems deceiving as something extremely destructive.

Ware uses the bible to build ethos he never claims or gives the impression that he is the authority on the subject and even quotes other people who are more of an authority. This is definitely a great tool to use as the people that he is writing to are “church goers” and they already hold the bible as something very credible. Ware uses verses from the bible but they are sometimes used out of context and he has to be careful that his audience doesn’t catch wind of this. It is evident at the beginning of the article that Ware is not claiming to be an authority; “Recent research has determined that most people regularly lie,” by saying “recent research” suggests that someone else did the research and that Ware is not even familiar with it as he does not even say who did the research.

There is always emotion involved when speaking about God and especially his audience would feel a sense of guilt and remorse if they have ever deceived or lied. Ware does however provide hope by means of forgiveness from God.

Ware does not give sufficient, accurate or relevant reasoning for his article. It is weakly supported with sources and evidence from the bible. And the mere fact that he is not an authority does nothing to his advice. The reasoning could however be typical for the audience if they are used to flaky and vague evidence supporting this subject.

I do not think that is was an effective article because it sounds as if Ware has no idea what he is talking about. Ware suggests and proves that he is clearly no authority but then goes ahead and tries to give advice on the topic of deception. His whole argument is only supported by three scriptures from the bible one of them is on deception. It would have been effective if the audience had no religious background but believed in God.

The Sales Pitch

You have probably heard of those infamous summer sales men who go door-to-door alarm systems and end the summer with 100,000 dollars in the bank. Well I did go out and sell this past summer, I GOT SOLD! The sales pitch was great.

The target audience tends to be returned missionaries that are college aged. These are apparently the prime door-to-door salesmen because they had to sell the gospel. If you can call it “selling!” These recruiters spend most of the time around campus from February to April reeling the students.

This was his WATCO and Enthymeme…

What are the consequences of spending your summer selling alarm systems on the status of your bank account.

Enthymeme: Spending the summer selling alarm systems will rapidly increase the amount of money in your bank account because selling alarm systems pays out very high commissions per sale.

The recruiter makes an appeal to pathos and ethos. All selling is extremely emotional and what better way to stir emotion than to appeal to your wallet. He really painted the picture of what I could buy with that much money and did not focus of tell me about any of the negative aspects of the work. It was all made very possible in my mind from what he said. The recruiter also focused on ethos because he is certainly the success story and knows from personal experience because he has been doing if for a long time. I should not have trusted only his authority and looked at all the cases. I think the possibility of money blinded me and for that reason my decision was purely pathos based.
When looking at what he used from STAR I realize that his reasoning was not sufficient, typical or accurate is was however relevant to what he wanted from me and that was to come out and sell. You could argue and say that it was accurate or typical to assume that all people my age want money and he knew that and used it to convince me.

It was a very effective pitch and not just because it worked. I still had a great experience selling and realize now that it was effective because even when selling the security systems my pitch was pathos based. If you can find what people need or even create that need, just as the recruiter did, it can be effective.
