Source Article for Paper A: A World of deception

Article: http://www.heartlight.org/articles/200703/20070319_deception.html

The target audience for the article “A World of Deception” by Phil Ware is primarily those people that are religious who already know a thing or too about God because Ware does not explain certain religious terms and assumes that audience knows. People who are perhaps trying to improve there own life and seek guidance.

WATCO: What are the consequences of deceiving on those that you use it with and on your own integrity.

Enthymeme: Deceiving will negatively affect your character and how others view you because God deems deceiving as something extremely destructive.

Ware uses the bible to build ethos he never claims or gives the impression that he is the authority on the subject and even quotes other people who are more of an authority. This is definitely a great tool to use as the people that he is writing to are “church goers” and they already hold the bible as something very credible. Ware uses verses from the bible but they are sometimes used out of context and he has to be careful that his audience doesn’t catch wind of this. It is evident at the beginning of the article that Ware is not claiming to be an authority; “Recent research has determined that most people regularly lie,” by saying “recent research” suggests that someone else did the research and that Ware is not even familiar with it as he does not even say who did the research.

There is always emotion involved when speaking about God and especially his audience would feel a sense of guilt and remorse if they have ever deceived or lied. Ware does however provide hope by means of forgiveness from God.

Ware does not give sufficient, accurate or relevant reasoning for his article. It is weakly supported with sources and evidence from the bible. And the mere fact that he is not an authority does nothing to his advice. The reasoning could however be typical for the audience if they are used to flaky and vague evidence supporting this subject.

I do not think that is was an effective article because it sounds as if Ware has no idea what he is talking about. Ware suggests and proves that he is clearly no authority but then goes ahead and tries to give advice on the topic of deception. His whole argument is only supported by three scriptures from the bible one of them is on deception. It would have been effective if the audience had no religious background but believed in God.
