The audience is college students who are graduating going out into the world seeking advice and a career.
WATCO decisions on your life
Enthymeme: Decisions change your life by altering the outcome in a positive or negative way.
The speech was given by Baz Lerman and written by Mary Schmich. Lerman mainly appeals to pathos or your emotion because he discusses very powerful issues pertaining to your life on a very individual basis. He does not seek to be an authority but still gives a great deal of non factual advice. Even though he is not an authority he still manages to appeal to ethos and create a sense of him being an expert. Lerman does not use logos as the advice he gives is not at all scientific or factual purely based on his life experience.
When looking at STAR it is very interesting. Lerman manages to give sufficient reasoning even though he is not an expert. One way he is able to do this is because when looking at the speech from the audiences perspective his advice is sufficient as he is older and therefore wiser as he as more life experience. Lerman is also respected as a famous and popular film writer. It is also very typical because the advice given is very easy to relate to and picture as being valid. When looking at relevancy, it is extremely relevant to these graduating college students as they will face many of these challenges in life.
The article is very effective and truly powerful this is mainly due to Baz Lerman and who and what he represents as a person. He is respected and revered among this age group.

Song Blog - Across the Lines by Tracy Chapman
Across the lines
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks
Choose sides
Or run for your life
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of America
They kill the dream of America
Little black girl gets assaulted
Ain't no reason why
Newspaper prints the story
And racist tempers fly
Next day it starts a riot
Knives and guns are drawn
Two black boys get killed
One white boy goes blind
Little black girl gets assaulted
Don't no one know her name
Lots of people hurt and angry
She's the one to blame
Who would dare to go
Under the bridge
Over the tracks
That separates whites from blacks
Choose sides
Or run for your life
Tonight the riots begin
On the back streets of America
They kill the dream of America
Little black girl gets assaulted
Ain't no reason why
Newspaper prints the story
And racist tempers fly
Next day it starts a riot
Knives and guns are drawn
Two black boys get killed
One white boy goes blind
Little black girl gets assaulted
Don't no one know her name
Lots of people hurt and angry
She's the one to blame
The audience for the song “Across the Lines” by Tracy Chapman is those people that cause the trouble in the community. More specially, those Blacks and whites who have very closed in minds and who hate the other race for no apparent reason other than the color of their skin.
WATCO racial violence on the American dream
Enthymeme: Racial violence kills the American dream because racial violence causes riots and disunity among the very essence of America, the people.
Tracy Chapman focuses very much on pathos to make people aware of the situation that she herself grew up in. She tells very personal stories of people that suffer from racism and violence that is caused by this type of hate. “Little black girl gets assaulted,” the fact that she is a “little black girl” really touches your heartstrings and feelings of sadness for this, more than likely, innocent young girl. Tracy also mentions a person’s race with every story, “Two black boys get killed, One white boy goes blind.” This keeps the racial violence the emphasis, as it’s not just a person, rather a black person or white person.
Tracy also makes an appeal to ethos as she herself did actually grow up in the “back streets of America” so she certainly knows what she is talking about and it bring whole new meaning to the lyrics and suggests that these are real people that are really suffering.
When looking at STAR, her reasoning is very accurate and typical of racism but when looking whether it is sufficient is another thing all together. Is racism the only cause to killing that American dream, probably not, there are so many other factors. Maybe it kills the American dream for those people who suffer from it but for America as a whole, less than likely.
It is a very effective song for conveying the message that it is meant to convey as Tracy Chapman throughout speaks from experience and relates real life situations to proving her point that racism kills the American dream.

Paper A Blog. The Art of Dating
My target audience for paper A entitled The Art of Dating was BYU students who are active about dating and who are searching for something more long term and serious.
WATCO deceiving on the first date on the possibility on engaging in a more serious relationship.
Deceiving on the first date increase your chances on engaging in a more serious relationship because deceiving on the first date helps you appeal to what your date actually wants.
I tried to appeal mainly to ethos however this was very difficult as my audience was wrong for the paper but I started off by defining what I meant by deceiving this gave the audience a better feel for what I meant by deceiving and made them feel more comfortable with actually doing it. I tried to let them know that it was normal and that most people actually deceive on the first date without actually knowing what they were doing; this created a feeling of understanding with audience. I also used personal examples that they could really relate with to gain their respect and attention.
Logos was used as I mentioned the studies that had been conducted and proven that people do actually deceive without knowing it. This brought the audience to my side as they realized that this was something that they shouldn’t feel guilty about because the majority of people do it and it is not considered lying.
In terms of STAR I think the reasoning that I gave was sufficient but did not apply to my audience so it wasn’t really typical for the average BYU student. I regret putting a lot of the information in the paper that I did because it was not really relevant in proving my point that deceiving does lead to a stable relationship it merely proves that people do it and that its normal among males and females.
To be honest after reading the paper over again I realized that it was not the most effective paper and really did not target my audience at all. BYU students tend to be very moral and conscience of there own integrity and honesty so trying to convince them that deceiving on the first date would get them a second date was far fetched and unrealistic.

Sex-ed in schools blog (paper B source)
Source: http://www.kutv.com/content/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=49ae28a2-fd80-4eb7-85bb-cb827e697b86
The article written by KUTV, regarding the Student Rally For Better Sex Education In Utah, is aimed mainly towards high school students to make them aware that there are other kids out there lobbying against only abstinence being taught in schools. The other audience just as important would be the parents of these kids let them know that this is important to their own children
WATCO: What are the consequences of teaching safe sex in schools on the level of STDs and unwanted pregnancy.
Enthymeme: Teaching safe sex in schools decreases the level of STDs and unwanted pregnancy because teaching safe sex allows kids to be well informed and practice safe sex.
The article appeals mainly to logos and ethos. The article is very authoritative because it interviews the very people that are effected by sex education the kids and the fact that they speak out and want better sex-ed is evident that it is of great importance in terms of life.
The article is also clear and logical. The interviewer directs and steers the argument by asking questions that cover all the counter arguments that a potential parent or member of the school board may have.
There is an appeal to pathos also but it is not as obvious as logos and ethos. The fact that kids speak out openly about sex at a rally could spark some emotion in parents that the children do care and are generally concerned about their future.
There is definitely sufficient reasoning for improving sex ed from the children present but I do not think that it is a typical or accurate representation of the rest of students as there is only few involved and can not speak for the rest of the kids in school.
The article is very effective to the naive parent but when you look at the article closely or the topic in general you realize the flaws. It is very biased and really doesn’t take into consideration that these are just kids who could just want to talk about the crude side of sex or get out of regular class for a while to learn about something comical. I think that the parents are ultimately the deciders in a young child’s education so it would be better coming from a parent.
