Analysis of the Queens address

The Spanish Armada a Speech by Queen Elizabeth I of England
Addressed to the English army at Tilbury Fort - 1588: “My loving people, we have been persuaded by some, that are careful of our safety, to take heed how we commit ourselves to armed multitudes, for fear of treachery; but I assure you, I do not desire to live to distrust my faithful and loving people.
Let tyrants fear; I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good will of my subjects. And therefore I am come amongst you at this time, not as for my recreation or sport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live or die amongst you all; to lay down, for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people, my honour and my blood, even the dust.
I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England, too; and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realms: to which, rather than any dishonour should grow by me, I myself will take up arms; I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field.
I know already, by your forwardness, that you have deserved rewards and crowns; and we do assure you, on the word of a prince, they shall be duly paid you. In the mean my lieutenant general shall be in my stead, than whom never prince commanded a more noble and worthy subject; not doubting by your obedience to my general, by your concord in the camp, and by your valour in the field, we shall shortly have a famous victory over the enemies of my God, of my kingdom, and of my people.”

Disclaimer: Sorry it’s a little longer that 400 hundred words
Analysis of Article:
The target audience is those people that are fighting against the Spanish Armada in the war that are perhaps tired and weary from fighting. It could also target those that are not currently involved but need motivation and meaning to rally them selves and go to fight.
What are the consequences of Queen Elizabeth’s dedication on a victory for the English people against the Spanish Armada?
Enthymeme: The Queen’s dedication will assure victory because the Queen’s dedication is an example of how everyone should be and if they are as dedicated, as she is England cannot fall.
Logos: The Queen in her address did not use any academic sources and spoke really only from experience and by using Pathos and Ethos.
Pathos: A great deal of emotion is used. It stirs guilt if you are not fighting and honor and patriotism if you are currently fighting. She pays the men compliments and promises them rewards for fighting. She appeals specifically to the audience at this time when women were looked down upon as weak by saying that as a queen she has other qualities, “I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England.”
Ethos: I think that the Queen is very credible and definitely speaks with authority especially for the audience of this time. The Queen has been through much and has dedicated her life to royal status, since birth, and for this reason she has qualified herself to speak to the audience.
Sufficient: The people would have followed to the Queen to the moon and back and the mere fact that the queen addresses these people is sufficient enough. But, it would have been difficult to follow someone that is a woman leader at the time who is speaking of war.
Typical: I think the examples and things that she says are very typical of the time. Two things really stood out that would have been accepted very well; 1) the fact that she plays down the woman and 2) the focus on God and how God fights for England.
Accurate: I don’t think it was completely accurate because would the Queen really fight and get her hands dirty if England were invaded…less than likely! People would have believed it for a second but when you actually think about it, it is ridiculous and was only said to sound more dedicated.
Relevant: I don’t think that anything could have been left out of the speech and everything that was wrote was there for a reason. It was not only relevant for one person but for a nation everyone from the patriots to the sexists.
Effective: I believe it to be very effective. The aspects that the Queen focuses on and how she addresses them fulfills the purpose of why the speech was given. It shows the Queen cares, she loves England and wants to do everything even lay down her life to protect English people.
