TV Commercial

Playstation is promoting the fact that gamers can escape reality and achieve there wildest dreams. The interesting aspect is that it shows a wide variety of different people who play games which says that no matter who you are or where you live Playstation has everything you need and want. Everyone from single mothers to young kids can find something that appeals to them.

The commercial is directed to those people who love to play video games or to those people searching for an outlet and who are perhaps curious in regards to the “virtual world”. It is for those people who escape the world or want to escape the world by playing games, whether it is strategy, first person shooting or platform.

This commercial relies heavily on pathos to convey its message. Pathos is represented by the use of light, camera angles and music. The commercial is dramatic and almost a little over the top for a games console but it makes you want to feel the same way the people do. All throughout you tend to ask yourself questions such as, how can a small boy or mother command armies and conquer worlds? Can I do the same? By allowing these questions to arise it stirs emotion within you and pushes you to want more. Ethos is unclear until the end where you realize the meaning and see that all those average people could actually achieve those things they speak of but only within the virtual world. It is not until then that you realize that they could be gaming authorities or experts. Logos is not used because video games are not reality there is no logic involved in playing. Gaming is an extremely emotional experience.

I think that the commercial is very effective as it holds your attention throughout it certainly appeals to pathos. The purpose of the commercial is stir emotion and spark questions within those who are interested in video games or maybe even those who are not so familiar with them but are curious.
